How Often Should You Really Wash Your Clothes?

Published on 23 April 2025 at 16:20

We’ve all been there—staring at a shirt and thinking, Did I wear this once or twice? Can I wear it again? The truth is, not every piece of clothing needs to hit the wash after a single wear. Over-washing can wear down fabric, fade colors, and waste water—not to mention your time.

So how often should you wash your clothes? At Fresh Fold Laundry, we believe in clean clothes and smart habits. Here’s a quick breakdown to help you keep your wardrobe—and your schedule—fresh and balanced.

Everyday Clothing

T-Shirts, Tank Tops, and Camisoles

Wash after every wear. These are closest to your body and absorb the most sweat and oils.

Jeans

Every 3-5 wears. Unless they’re visibly dirty or stretched out, jeans can go a while. Spot clean minor stains and hang to air out between wears.

Leggings & Workout Gear

Every wear. Even if you didn’t really sweat, bacteria builds up quickly. Wash them to avoid odors and fabric breakdown.

Outerwear

Sweaters

Every 5-7 wears, unless worn directly on the skin. If layered over something, you can extend the time between washes.

Jackets and Coats

Once or twice per season, or more often if they’re exposed to a lot of dirt or city grime.

Special Occasion or Delicate Items

Dress Clothes

Every 1-3 wears, depending on use and fabric. Steam between wears to freshen them up.

Undergarments

Every wear. This one’s non-negotiable—for hygiene and comfort.

Bras

Every 3-4 wears. Hand wash or use a delicates bag and cold water cycle.

Home Linens

  • Towels: Every 3-4 uses

  • Bed Sheets: Weekly

  • Pillowcases: Every 3-4 days (your face will thank you!)

Fresh Fold Pro Tip

Instead of guessing, follow the sniff test and the fabric care label. When in doubt, air it out. Fresh air can extend the life of many garments between washes.
